GREEK FILM EVENT

Hosted by the Hellenic Cultural Foundation

1968

“1968” is a 2018 docu-drama by the acclaimed director Tassos Boulmetis and producer Alexandra Andriopoulou focused on the April 4, 1968 basketball game in which the Greek underdog team A.E.K. played the Czech team in the European Cup finals before a crowd of 80,000 spectators in the Panathenaic stadium in Athens. A.E.K. never forgot where it came from, having been founded in 1924 of refugees from Constantinople; the film records memories of that disaster and the Greek families from Asia Minor whose lives were forever changed. For Greece the game took on a greater importance than a sports event, played just one year into the military dictatorship and at a time when the Greek nation badly needed a morale boost and heroes. 1 hr. 32 mins. In Greek with English sub-titles.
